Description of ISTPs

ISTP's are known as the "Crafters" which does not necessarily mean arts and crafts. It means they excel at utilizing their hands or even their entire physical bodies.

They are driven to perfect their particular skill set whether it be playing golf, performing ballet, operating sophisticated machinery or building a house.

ISTP's are the most adventurous of all the 16 types.

They are known for loving action and excitement especially when it involves piloting machinery such as motorcycles, airplanes, speed boats and fast cars.

Many ISTP's are drawn to physically exhilarating activities such as sky diving, surfing, skiing, and scuba diving.

ISTP's tend to be more physically coordinated than other types and they frequently have quick reflexes.

For some ISTP's their choice of tool is their own body which they will keep in top performing condition.

They tend to be introverted, logical and unemotional. For this reason they may appear somewhat cold and less friendly than other types.

ISTPs prefer careers where:
  • Management provides specific and realistic directions
  • There are several opportunities to demonstrate competence
  • The culture appreciates fair but tough decision making
  • The work offers the opportunity to rapidly change direction and to respond to problems as they arise
  • The work is fun and allows for some spontaneity
  • You can apply your natural ability to focus and concentrate, rather than multitasking
  • The environment, culture and pace allow you to consider things fully before having to respond
  • The work allows you to work at a careful steady pace
  • The work allows you adequate private time to work alone and to concentrate
  • The work is realistic, down to earth, and practical, rather than abstract and theoretical
  • The work allows you to utilize your strong memory to recall details, facts, and people
  • The work is focused on the Now not the Future, on what is rather than what could be
  • The work allows you to utilize your natural ability to analyze and make objective, logical decisions
  • The environment allows for freedom and flexibility and is loosely structured without too many rules
