Why on earth would you pay a stranger $100 to $200 or more to help you sort through your career direction and help you get started on what could be the best time of your life?
If you have been considering a career change, or starting a job search, or perhaps starting your own business, a few well spent minutes with an experienced career counselor (career coach) will help get you started in the right direction.

Sadly, when it comes to making big changes in one's life, parents, spouses, other relatives, friends and coworkers are usually the least supportive. Why? Unless they are high energy, optimistic, and successful in their own right, the people closest to you won't want to see you change. They like you just the way you are. Sure they may complain about you, but most likely they will be afraid of any changes you propose.
What you really need is someone who is:
- Totally objective
- Experienced at helping others manage their careers
- Experienced at hiring, and yes even firing
- Highly intuitive
- Knows how to match people with the right jobs
- Understands how companies and HR departments work
- Knows how recruiters works
- Experienced with career change
Can you use a headhunter for career change and job search advice? It depends who is paying the bill. Recruiters usually work for hiring managers and human resource (HR) departments who have positions to fill. The recruiter stands to earn 20 to 30% of the first years base pay if he fills their opening and if the candidate stays on for 60 to 90 days.
For a $100,000 per year job a recruiter could earn up to $30,000. For executives, the recruiter could earn $50,000 to $75,000 plus. Unless you are willing to dish out a few thousand dollars to get the undivided attention of a headhunter you don't stand a chance in getting objective, qualified help from them. Except that...
CareerPlanner.com has established a method to bring you highly concentrated career advice in just 60 minutes.
